Apps that everybody should have on their iPhone
The title is a bit click-bait-y, because in reality this list will be more like "if you are interested in this kind of thing, you should have this app". I.e. I will be recommending workout apps, but I don't actually think "everybody" should have those workout apps if that isn't something you are interested in.
Anyways. Here we go!
Travel
- ABRP - if you have an EV, essential app. Means "A Better Route Planner" and that is exactly what it is. Pick what car you drive and where you are going and you will get actually correct and useful charging stops and planning, with enormous amount of configuration possible.
- Flighty - subscription required, but you can buy weekly/monthly/yearly depending on your needs. Well worth its price no matter what. I do not take a flight without it.
Content Consumption & Entertainment
- Reeder - the best RSS reader app. Aren't you using RSS? You should.
- Callsheet - IMDB but good.
- Ivory - if you use Mastodon, this is the best client.
Health & Fitness
- Hevy - the premier gym workout logger. I have tried many. This is Strong but actually maintained and updated instead of abandoned.
- CardioBot - only relevant if you wear an Apple Watch. "Easily understand the data captured by the Apple Watch to improve your lifestyle and discover notable patterns. All-in-one solution for monitoring your heart rate and daily activities. It serves as both a heart rate monitor and an activity tracker, offering a convenient way to monitor your cardiovascular health and fitness in one place."
- Fitness Stats - quickly aggregate your activity and workout data for insights. Easily compare across two date ranges.
- Fitness Totals - similar to above but really focused on yearly summaries and provides for a nicer sharable screenshot. For me they go together
- Gentler Streak - "Embark on a balanced fitness journey, designed to prioritize your well-being by seamlessly integrating exercise, rest, and wellness monitoring, all based on your daily readiness." Basically to avoid overtraining.
Photography
- Halide - if you are at all into photography, you need this pro app on your phone.
- DOF Slider - this is more speciality, but if you take photos with "real" cameras, this is great to get the right configuration dialed in for depth of field.
Finance
- Curve - I only use this for one thing. Enable Apple Pay on credit cards that do not offer them natively. So you can use your favorite credit cards for rewards or whatever, but still be able to easily pay (and not carry the cards with you).
- Nudget - great little budgeting and expense tracking app by an indie developer. Has everything you need.
- Splitwise - if you ever need to split expenses between family or friends, just use this app. Really. It will simplify things greatly.
Other
- Apple Support - an Apple app but not installed by default. You should have it! Great for tech support, setting up repairs, getting answers fast, and so on. Personalized to your actual devices.
- Due - the reminder app that will not let you forget. The point is put actual urgent things in here, because it will nag you incessantly until actually done.
- Elsewhen - if you ever have to deal with time zones, use this app.
- Frame Grabber - easily export frames from your videos as photos instead of making screenshots
- Habit Tracker - it's in the name. These are a dime a dozen on the App Store but this is an indie app, and I think it looks great and works well.
